Ok so this is my piece, and the idea behind it is that I am going to do the 5 different tastes: Salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami. You probably can tell this painting is slightly unfinished - I hope to update it before Wednesday so it looks less choppy. I also wanted to know what you guys thought about the idea of adding the word Salty to the bottom - probably doing different values of blue/purple because I feel like it might help balance the yellow and make the content clearer. Thanks for your comments! Also the piece is 18 x 18 so larger than all of my other pieces.

Finished the piece! Had a super hard time with the coloring of the apples but figured it out. Happy with how it looks. The drop shadows were also a little difficult but I think they really added to the illusion. Definitely want to do another piece like this.
First did leaves of first strawberry. I think I may need to add more yellow because the green looks a little fake. Then did the other strawberries base colors because doing the seeds was taking to long. I think the red looks more accurate, but they look kinda weird next to the first one. I really am happy with how the cherries look. I had to build up a lot of color to make them look dark enough. Still using the exacto knife to scratch through, working pretty well.
Did second lemon piece, found it hard to get texture of peel to look right. Started first strawberry. Doing the seeds is super detailed. Working on getting the right red color, think I might need to go a bit darker. Also the paper is sort of bumpy so I'm having to do multiple layers of the red color, blend it and then use the exacto knife to scratch out where the seeds should go and the highlights. Definitely taking longer than expected.
After photographing the fruit, this week I began the drawing. I've done a bit of photorealism with colored pencils with my past two pieces, but this is completely different. One of my goals was to scale up, but this is definitely a slow process. I outlined where I think the fruit goes and did the first lemon slice. I found it difficult to get the right yellow color as it almost blends into the paper at some points, but I don't want it to look to neon. There also is a shadow on one side, but I can't seem to pinpoint what color it is and I think my gray looks a little too blue. I'm waiting on doing a drop shadow because I am a bit confused on whether or not it should be blue-ish like in the photo or more of a darker paper shade. Also the colors look different on this piece of paper than white so I'm using a testing strip to try out the colors.
So first figured out my idea, to have the fruit spell out tart in the pigpen cipher code. Working in colored pencil. Chose to draw lemons, strawberries, cherries, and apples. At first I was going to do the piece in sections, photographing the references separately, but I realized the lighting needed to be the same for the illusion to work so I got all of the fruit together and photographed them with the same lighting.
