I chose Roy Lichtenstein's work to inspire mine as it had some similar qualities. His sculptural work is flat and uses graphic, "pop-art" symbols and shapes. They often had a plastic-seeming finish and sometimes have a mobile like quality (like shown above). These qualities are also reflected in my piece which focuses on symbolic flat shapes of fruits, graphic features, and it will have a mobile quality.
Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27, 1923 in New York City. He is obviously most well known for his paintings, synonymous with pop art in general, but made other work along the way, including the sculptures shown above. As a teenager he studied at the Art Students League of NY with Reginald Marsh before going to Ohio State University. He was drafted and sent to Europe where he continued to sketch, before returning to NY. He was inspired by the Abstract Expressionist movement and used similar techniques while unlike the others incorporating some common characters (Mickey, Donald Duck). In 1961, he created Look Mickey which was his first use of Ben-Day dots that became integral to his work. He drew from comic books and newspaper strips, and became an active participant in the Pop Art Movement, focusing less on artistic expression than the Abstract Expressionists. At the time he was criticized for copying and being unoriginal. In the next years until his death in 1997, he continued to explore with his work, using new materials and moving to 3D sculptures similar to those above. Using the 3rd link above (image duplicator) look at how Lichtenstein's work has changed and transformed over the years (click on decade and then year at top). What are some qualities or mediums you notice changing or being focused on during a specific time period .(write out three different time periods and some characteristics about the work)? 2. How do you think Lichtenstein was influenced by the artistic movements over the course of his life and how can you see this reflected? What movements are occurring today and reflect on whether this has influenced your work at all? 3. There are multiple relations between Lichtenstein's pop art paintings and his sculptures. Try to find two works (painting and sculpture) that seems similar and compare them. Are there any pieces of yours you could alter to fit another medium?

Raffaelo di Giovanni Santi or more commonly known by Raphael, was a well know painter, architect, and "old master" of the High Renaissance along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. HIs work can be separated into three sections: his first years in Umbria, 4 years learning in Florence, and the next twelve years working for the Popes. He probably studied with his father, a painter, until he when Raphael was 11, leaving him orphaned. He continued working in his father's workshop. He later worked for Perugino as an apprentice shown in their similar styles and practices until moving to Florence in 1504, as a "master" (fully trained). He was influenced greatly by Leonardo da Vinci, including the pyramidal composition of the Mona Lisa, contrapposto, and his sfumato modeling. In 1508, he was called to Rome by the Pope and was commissioned to paint the "Raphael Rooms" which were the Pope's private libraries at the Vatican Palace. One of these rooms, the Stanza della Segnatura contains The School of Athens. He even dabbled in architecture, and after Bramante's death was seen as the most important architect in Rome. He stayed in Rome for the next 12 years, creating frescoes, tapestries, and portraits until his death in 1520 at the age of 37. In regards to his processes, he used drawings to lay out possible compositions. Some drawings appear even better than the paintings, as they are often very precise with shadings and value. He used metalpoint after everyone else and used red or black chalk often. The video below explains the process of transferring a cartoon onto a wall, a process used by Raphael often. How did Raphael's apprenticeship with Perugino influence his future artwork? 2. Who are some of the people in Raphael's School of Athens and what symbols are represented? 3. What was Raphael's relationship with other master painters including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci? |
