Fantastic Four Project/Head and Heart
For this project, we were asked to created 4 pieces, 2 representing our head - content/theme we want to explore, and 2 representing our heart - something we enjoy doing...
Head - Political Apathy
Does It Really Matter? is a sculptural piece using a ballot box and paper with quotes or phrases I've heard that reflect people losing interest in politics. I think this is something we all can relate to with constant media and as the world seems to get worse and worse everyday. I've found that specifically with younger people and my generation, there is a feeling of apathy and detachment from politics. Instead of being aware of all of the issues in our world, we self-protect by deciding to ignore it, and pretend it isn't effecting us. Of course there is a limit and consequences to an overload of information, but ignoring the issues won't make them go away, and some issues are getting worse without the attention and efforts they need right now. As a generation, we can't afford to be apathetic or wait until we are older because some issues are only fixable if changed now. I chose to put quotes and phrases that I've heard around school and other places including, "It's not affecting me" or "I'm not interested in politics." I hope this piece leads people to self-reflect and try to be better informed about the world around them and try to avoid seeing politics as a corrupted unchangeable thing. These messages being inserted into a ballot box is showing that people aren't choosing one candidate or another, they're choosing to be apathetic to the entire breadth of issues.
Endangered is a pastel drawing of a sea turtle. Most people don't seem apathetic about climate change. Most of us realize it is an issue and know some information about it, but the truth is not everyone is seeing the real life effects yet other than more extreme weather in the past few years. I chose to draw a sea turtle because it is currently an endangered animal that will continue to be at an increased risk with the continuation of climate change. We've grown up knowing many different types of animals, including sea turtles, and by drawing attention to them I hope people realize the more immediate impact these issues are having on species of animals around the world and feel a greater pull towards making changes to combat this issue.

Heart - Portraiture
Ada is a graphite pencil and white colored pencil drawing done on gray toned paper. I focused on doing a realistic portrait and working on using value, especially when experimenting with the gray toned paper. Overall, I am really interested in doing portraits and in my sketchbook I had done some mini ones so this was the first bigger sized one.
Maeve (I'm not sure of the titles yet) is a drawing done digitally with the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. I have tried to do some portraits on the iPad in the past, and they don't always turn out the best, but for this one I really focused on trying out a new style and process of laying down colors and trying to build the value slowly. I don't love this piece but I think I learned a lot from doing it.
