Artist Statement
Over the past few months, I have been interested in exploring connections between food and happiness. My series which is still in progress showcases foods representing the different tastes (salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami). I’ve found that food for many is an expression of joy, and when I started taking a Happiness class over quarantine, I wanted to look closer at the connection between these two topics.
In my portraits, I worked with charcoal, colored pencils, and acrylic inks to examine personality in different individuals. In the triptychs, I looked at representation of individuals through more and more abstract visions and used color to achieve continuity. In my most recent work, I’ve been using acrylic paint to achieve realistic images of a person eating a specific food. I’m also planning to experiment with oil paint for still lifes of my favorite foods. I want to continue to explore the themes of food, happiness, and personality.
