This week, I started the actual piece after experimenting a little more with the practice sheet. I looked up some videos on colored pencils. I found that having really sharp pencils is important, as well as burnishing with the white colored pencil to blend the colors. I had some difficulty with the eye shape, I think it might be a little out of proportion, but hopefully I can shade it so it looks right. Overall, pretty good progress, definitely need to be working quicker if I can finish both this and the object by the deadline.

My plan for this in-class project is going to be a triptych of a person's (Matthew's) face, an object that represents him, and an alcohol ink piece. I'm not quite sure yet what to do for the object, I'll work that out later. So this week, I was able to take photos of Matthew, picked one that I cropped on to his eye. I thought about cropping it to other parts of his face, but I really like the eye, because I think it can show emotion. I haven't worked in colored pencils in quite a while so before starting on the actual piece, I wanted to do some practice and work on layering the colors and understanding how to blend. It was kind of frustrating because I started off with more dense coloring, but the light layers did not feel like enough pigment. I might look up some videos on how to use colored pencils to pick up some techniques.
So, I finished the painting this week. I focused on making the sky a bit more relaxed and not so choppy. I also added some orange and red and turquoise to the trees to make them stand out. I also decided to cut out the cylinder in the back and the flowers in the front. I am pretty happy with it, I think it feels a little empty in the front, so I could maybe add the flowers after critique. I am definitely happy with the changes I made and i think I learned a lot. Painting this required me to relax a little which was a bit difficult but I think I started to get more into it by the end.
After finishing all of the pieces, I decided to hang them as shown above creating a window with the two "real" expressions are shown, so that people much look in between the outside drawing to see the person's true emotions. I definitely think the triangle or circle idea I had originally might have looked better, but time didn't allow that to happen. I think this does express the content however, and hopefully makes people interested enough to look closer.
This week, I really focused on how to resolve the foreground. I really did not know how to make the grass look normal. My mom suggested not sticking to the reference photo and adding in striations in the grass. Following her suggestion, I went in by layers and added in dark lines and then the lines, highlights, and then the next layer. I think this added a lot to the dimension in the piece, so I'm pretty happy with it right now.
