This week, I finalized my composition for my in class project, and started the charcoal sketch. I didn't have the small jam jar I wanted so I'm instead using a spice shaker that I'll try to make look like a mini jar. For the croissant, I used acrylic spray? to prevent any molding as I paint. I chose to zoom in a lot more for the final composition so I'll be able to get more details. I also worked on the independent project. I focused on making the fingers look more realistic, and fixing the fingernails. I'm still having difficulty making the fingernails look proportional, but I think they look good otherwise. I started playing with glazes to do less opaque layers, and that's been helping the paints blend.

Yay! I finally finished my inclass project! I spent a day doing the fingers, which were really difficult for some reason. I srtill wish I had gotten a little bit darker values, but overall I'm happy with how they look. Then I painted the background, and then I did the shirt, which actually looks pretty good. Then I finished the chocolate and added more texture before redoing the teeth, because they really needed some work. In comparison with my past pieces, I think this one is definitely the most vibrant and I think that's due to the orange underpainting. Overall I'm really happy with it! Although there's definitely a few tweaks I might have made with more time, but now I'm scared to mess it up haha. I did not get much work done on my at-home because I was focused on this one.
This week I worked a lot more on my in-class project. I kept working on skin tone, and added the lips and started working on the chocolate piece. I hopefully can finish up the fingers and chocolate piece this week before doing the background before Monday's critique. I also started really working on my second piece. The model has more yellow undertones so I'm trying to balance that with my tendency to use purple as a shadow without making green. Overall, everything is turning out pretty well - I definitely need to spend more time working on the at-home piece though.
So this week, I made pretty good progress on my in-class project. I'm still experimenting with skin tones, because I want it to be redder than my last painting. I think moving onto next week I'll try mixing more paint at a time to be able to blend easier. Hopefully I can finish the face and move on to the fingers and chocolate. For my at-home project, I picked the photo shown and sketched it onto the canvas. I hoped to get more done, but luckily I have a little more time for that project.
On Monday, I got started with the actual painting of my in-class piece. I'm using a mix of light cadmium red, yellow ochre, titanium white, and a little bit of ultramarine blue. In my last piece I accomplished shadows by adding blue, but this time I'm trying to use more red. I also went to get my photos for my at home piece sour. I'm going to pick one of these photos and then start on that next week, I went ahead and did the underpainting on Friday.
So this week, I got a pretty good start on my piece. I first went through my photos and picked out the photo shown. I'm working on the bitter piece so I am using dark chocolate as the food. I took the photo, and then did an orange underpainting. I haven't done this with the other pieces in the series but I hope it will make the skin tone warmer. I then did the starting sketch, and will work on the first painting layer this weekend.
Yay I'm finished! I put the finishing touch on m piece today by fixing the mouth, the lips, and repainted the background color to look even. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the finished product!
I feel really close to being done! I first fixed the size/perspective of the thumb. And painted the teeth which was quite challenging. I need to repaint the lip over the edge of the teeth now. I also tried to fix the background, but I think I made it worse because the paint dried to a darker color.
Today, I painted the fingers. If you look at the reference photo, the angle of the thumb is really weird so I'm going to go back and try to make it look like its bent instead of just coming from the camera angle. I ended up having to paint the skin tone three times because I kept messing up the colors and I'm still not completely satisfied with the result.
